The new Eurodac system has entered into operation, together with key components of the EU interoperability architecture: the European Search Portal (ESP) and the Common Identity Repository (CIR). This marks an important milestone in the implementation of the updated Eurodac Regulation and the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum and the wider interoperability framework.
Developed and operated by eu-LISA in close cooperation with Member States and the European Commission, the new system provides national authorities across Europe with a significantly enhanced database supporting asylum and migration management, enabling the reliable identification of individuals entering the EU as asylum seekers or irregular migrants.
"This is the result of close cooperation between eu-LISA, Member States, the European Commission and our partners," said Tillmann Keber, Executive Director of eu-LISA. "The entry into operation of the new Eurodac demonstrates our shared commitment to delivering secure, reliable and modern digital solutions that support national authorities in carrying out their tasks. It also showcases eu-LISA's growing capability to deliver complex large-scale systems using modern software engineering practices and increased in-house expertise."
Supporting the implementation of the Pact on Migration and Asylum
Eurodac is one of the European Union's largest information systems in the field of migration and asylum. It is used by national authorities across Member States and associated countries to process and compare data in accordance with the applicable legal framework.
The new Eurodac supports the implementation of the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum by providing the technical capabilities required under the updated Eurodac Regulation. Compared with the previous generation of the system, it introduces the ability to process both fingerprints and facial images, expands the identity and business data that can be stored, broadens the circumstances under which data can be recorded, and provides enhanced functionalities to support authorities in carrying out their tasks.

Delivered through eu-LISA's Software Factory
The development of the new Eurodac reflects eu-LISA's evolving approach to delivering large-scale IT systems.
Using its Software Factory model, eu-LISA brought together multidisciplinary teams working with Agile and DevSecOps methodologies to design, develop, test and deploy the system. This approach strengthens the Agency's in-house expertise, increases technical ownership and supports the efficient delivery of complex digital solutions.
With the system now operational, eu-LISA will continue to work closely with Member States, the European Commission and partner agencies to support its operation and future evolution as part of the EU's interoperability framework.
