Benefits

  • Efficient border crossings: EES streamlines border checks, reducing waiting times while improving accuracy, security and the overall experience for travellers;
  • Overstay tracking: EES helps identify travellers who exceed their permitted stay, aiding Member States in managing irregular migration;
  • Combat identity fraud: EES captures and verifies biometric information, such as fingerprints and facial images, ensuring accurate identification of travellers;
  • Enhanced internal security: EES supports the identification of persons involved in criminal activities by integrating with other EU information systems to perform cross-checks against security databases.

Did You Know?

  • EES will enhance security for an estimate 1.3 billion travellers entering or leaving the Schengen Area annually;
  • By using electronic records, EES effectively replaces the practice of manually stamping passports.

Further information, including meeting agendas, conclusions, as well as the registration process, can be found on the Working Group for Carriers page.
