Strengthening cross-border law enforcement cooperation through a centralised and secure data exchange infrastructure
The Prüm II Central Router is a core component of the Prüm II framework. It is designed to modernise and streamline the exchange of biometric data between Member States’ law enforcement authorities and Europol.
Managed by eu-LISA, the system will introduce a centralised routing mechanism, replacing fragmented bilateral connections with a more efficient architecture.
Once operational, the Central Router will support the secure and standardised exchange of DNA profiles, dactyloscopic data, and facial images, enabling more consistent cross-border investigative cooperation.
Architecture
- Centralised routing infrastructure
- Each Member State operates its own national system
- Member States and Europol connect to the Central Router
- Queries routed through a “hub-and-spoke” topology
Single integration point for each Member State
- Lower operational complexity
- Central visibility of query lifecycle
Supports:
- Europol integration
- Interoperability (art 22) queries
- Rematching
Benefits
- Closing information gaps by replacing fragmented bilateral exchanges with a centralised architecture
- Enhanced Investigative Reach: Expanding beyond DNA and Dactyloscopic data to include Facial Images
- Europol Integration: Enabling Member States to cross-check against third-country data held by Europol, and vice versa
Prüm II is scheduled to Enter into Operation in Q2 2027
