Pre-travel Screening of Visa-exempt Visitors for Security and Migration Risks
The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) improves the security and safety of travelling to or through the Schengen Area, by requiring all visa-exempt third-country nationals to apply for pre-travel authorisation online.
Notice
ETIAS is currently not in operation and no applications for travel authorisations are collected at this point. Travellers will be able to apply via the official website and/ or app for mobile devices prior to the start of operation of ETIAS and will have to pay a fee of €7.
For the latest information on the official launch of the system, how it works, as well as detailed FAQs, consult the official Travel Europe - ETIAS website.
Who Needs ETIAS?
ETIAS is a pre-travel authorisation system for travellers from almost 60 countries that do not need a visa to travel to any of the 30 European countries requiring ETIAS.
How Does ETIAS Work?
- Travelers from visa-exempt countries will need to fill in an online application and pay a €7 fee to obtain authorisation before entering the Schengen Area.
- ETIAS cross-checks applicant data against existing and future EU security databases, such as SIS, EES, VIS, as well as Europol and Interpol, enabling the advance verification of potential security, migration and public health risks.
- Most applications will be processed within minutes, ensuring minimal delays for travellers. Once issued the authorisation, travellers can stay for up to 90 days in the EU and Schengen Area.
How Much Does ETIAS Cost?
When applying using the official ETIAS website, travellers will be charged a fee of €7.
Exemptions:
- Applicants under 18 or over 70 years of age;
- Family members of EU citizens;
- Family members of non-EU nationals who have the right to move freely throughout the European Union.
Benefits
Utilised by border guards at Schengen Area external border crossing points, and by air, land and sea carriers prior to boarding, the ETIAS simplifies procedures and reinforces EU internal security in two ways:
- Through the identification of persons that might pose a security risk before they arrive at the Schengen external border;
- By making information available to national law enforcement authorities and Europol, where this is necessary in a specific case of prevention, detection or investigation of a terrorist offence, or other serious criminal offences.
ETIAS will also contribute to:
- Reducing procedures and border-crossing times;
- Reinforcing the EU’s visa liberalisation policy;
- Preventing irregular migration.
Working Group for Carriers
To aid commercial operators, eu-LISA has established a dedicated working group, composed of carrier association representatives, covering companies operating at air and sea borders, and international carriers transporting groups overland by coach.
Further information, including meeting agendas, conclusions, as well as the registration process, can be found on the Working Group for Carriers page.
