eu-LISA joins citizens and partners across the European Union in celebrating Europe Day — a moment to reflect on the values that define Europe and to celebrate the independence and democracy that shape our shared future.

At the heart of the European Union lies a simple but powerful promise: that people can live in freedom, that their rights are protected, and that they are treated equally. These values — democracy, rule of law, solidarity and respect for diversity — have shaped Europe over decades and continue to guide its path forward.

This year’s Europe Day theme, Europe’s independence and Europe’s democracy, highlights the importance of protecting these achievements in a changing world. Safeguarding our freedoms and strengthening Europe’s resilience remain a shared responsibility.

Supporting free movement through secure technology

One of the clearest and most tangible expressions of these freedoms is the Schengen Area, enabling millions of people to move freely across borders every day. Behind this seamless experience is a strong and secure technological backbone.

eu-LISA is proud to support these core European values in practice. By developing and operating large-scale, interoperable IT systems, the Agency helps ensure that freedom of movement within Schengen is maintained while strengthening security. Its systems support border management, migration and law enforcement cooperation across Member States — contributing to a Europe that is both open and secure.

eu-LISA’s Executive Director Tillmann Keber said:

“On 9 May we celebrate Europe Day, an opportunity not only to highlight values that unite Europe - peace, solidarity and respect for diversity - but also to reflect on the journey that has brought us here.

It is a moment to recognise all that Europe has achieved over the years for its citizens, and to remember that progress and unity are built over time, through dedication, commitment, and continuous effort.

At eu-LISA, colleagues from many different nationalities, cultures and professional backgrounds work together every day towards common goals. This is one of our greatest strengths and reflects the spirit of the European Union itself.”

Join us across Europe

To mark Europe Day, eu-LISA will engage with citizens and visitors in three locations:

Across all locations, visitors can meet eu-LISA teams, discover how EU systems work behind the scenes and take part in engaging, interactive activities.
