In 2025, Europe marks 30 years of the Schengen Information System (SIS) — the IT backbone that helps keep the Schengen Area both secure and border-free. SIS is the largest and most widely used information-sharing system for border control and law enforcement in Europe. It supports the daily work of police officers, border guards and judicial authorities — helping locate missing persons, stop criminals at borders, and coordinate cross-border investigations. At eu-LISA, we operate and evolve SIS to ensure it stays reliable, secure, and ready for the challenges of tomorrow.

In this video, eu-LISA officers Anna and Dominick explain what SIS does and how the Agency keeps this essential system running smoothly.
