As of 1 January 2023, Sweden holds the 6-month rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union, taking it over from the Czech Republic.
The Swedish Presidency continues the implementation of the Trio Programme launched under the French Presidency in the beginning of 2022.
Sweden is assuming the Presidency of the Council of the European Union at a time of historic challenges for Member States and the Union as a whole. Russia's invasion of Ukraine is a threat to European security, with dire migration consequences, as well as severe impacts on global food and energy supplies. The Swedish Presidency has promised to promote a continued active and united EU policy to counteract Russia's aggression against Ukraine.
During its presidency, Sweden has committed to focus on four priority areas: security, competitiveness, a green energy transition, and democratic values as well as the rule of law.
In the area of Home Affairs, the Swedish Presidency intends to advance the new Pact on Migration and Asylum negotiations as per the agreement between the institutions to conclude the process during the current parliamentary time. A review of the migration and asylum system is important, as a matter of principle and in strategic terms, and critical to ensuring effective Schengen cooperation. The new Pact on Migration and Asylum sets out improved procedures throughout the asylum and migration system, as well as a balance in the principles of fair-sharing of responsibility and solidarity. One of the key focal points with regard to border, migration and asylum management is Eurodac, a large-scale IT system managed by eu-LISA. Through technology, the Agency supports the efforts of the EU and its Member States in keeping European open and secure.
Throughout the years, eu-LISA has had strong relations with all Member States within the rotating EU Presidency system and has traditionally co-organise its flagship events together with the presiding country. The Agency's latest Industry Roundtable and the Anniversary Conference held in October 2022, were organised under the auspices of the Czech Presidency. Close collaboration with all our partners is essential in order to contribute to the achievement of Member States' priorities in the area of Justice and Home Affairs.
