eu-LISA Management Board meets in Strasbourg

The Management Board of the European Union Agency for the Operational Management of Large-Scale IT Systems in the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice (eu-LISA) held its 36th meeting on 22-23 June 2022. The meeting was organised in Strasbourg under the auspices of the French Presidency of the Council of the EU to emphasize the close cooperation of eu-LISA with the EU Member States. The Management Board meeting was opened by the Director of the European and International Affairs in the French Minister of the Interior, Jean Mafart.

During the two-day meeting, the Management Board discussed the implementation of the Entry/Exit System (EES), the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), Interoperability between the IT systems as well as the implementation of the European Criminal Records Information System for Third Country Nationals (ECRIS-TCN). The Management Board got an overview of the ongoing work on the Schengen Information System (SIS) recast, the preparations for the Visa Information System (VIS) recast and the status of the European Asylum Dactyloscopy Database (Eurodac).

eu-LISA's Management Board also adopted the Consolidated Annual Activity Report 2021 and discussed the future evolution and governance model of the Agency.

In addition, the board members got an overview of the priorities of the upcoming Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU which will start on 1 July 2022.

The Management Board meeting also marked the 10th year of eu-LISA's activity.

The Chair of the Management Board Zsolt Szolnoki: "It is a great personal honour for me to greet the 10th anniversary of the Agency as the Chairman of the Board. I have been very fortunate to be able to follow the evolution of the Agency from a small organisation to a mid-size EU Agency. Today, eu-LISA plays an excellent and crucial role as the digital border guard of Schengen while managing one of the largest and most complex interoperability programmes of the EU. On behalf of the board, I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the Agency over the past 10 years, for their work. Especially the Executive Director Krum Garkov who has been building this Agency from the very beginning and will hand over a strong and valuable organisation later this year."

The Executive Director of eu-LISA Krum Garkov: "The story of eu-LISA so far in many respects is a story about turning the digital technologies from a commodity into political priority and turning them into service of the European citizens. Our organisation, our services, our people have tremendously matured through those ten years. Today, we are stronger, more competent and more resilient than ever before. But this is not the end of the journey for the Agency and I am convinced that in the years to come eu-LISA will continue to grow and reinvent itself. I have no doubts that eu-LISA will continue to be on the forefront of digital transformation in the EU and will continuously extend its contribution to the efforts of the Member States to keep Europe open, strong and secure."
