After the successful completion of a wide range of technical preparations, Europol was connected to the second generation Schengen Information System (SIS II) on 10 December 2014. Furthermore, Europol also performed its first query to the system on that day. Between September 2013 and October 2014 eu-LISA performed various preparatory activities and test campaigns in order to in order to ensure Europol's access to SIS II. Europol's connection to SIS II is one of the milestones in the inter-agency cooperation to be followed up in the coming years with Europol's accession also to Eurodac and the Visa Information System (VIS) within the mandate provided in the legal basis.
eu-LISA provides 24/7 operational management not only for the SIS II Central System, the largest information system for public security and law enforcement cooperation in Europe, but also for:
VIS - a system that allows Schengen states to share visa data for those who visit or move throughout the Schengen area; and
Eurodac- a centralised EU database that collects and processes the digitalised fingerprints of asylum seekers.
