The final Me-CODEX III conference, entitled "Celebrating 13 years of e-CODEX: the past, the now and the future" took place in The Hague, Netherlands, on 29 February. The event symbolised the end of the Me-CODEX III project consortium's management of e-CODEX.
The conference opened with a symbolic handing-over of e-CODEX between Tim Holthaus, representing the consortium and Lorenzo Rinaldi receiving it on eu-LISA's behalf. Further morning sessions included presentations by DG JUST's Cristian Nicolau and Dirk Staudenmayer, as well as a Keynote by the former Dutch e-CODEX representative, Ernst Steigenga.
In his speech, Mr Rinaldi highlighted that the handover is seen by eu-LISA as a continuum, a bridging from heritage to the future and that, from this day forth, it is up to the Agency to build on the solid foundations of e-CODEX and take it to the next level. He went on to state that, as the latest addition to the Digital Heart of Schengen, the Agency will now ensure e-CODEX's long-term sustainability and governance while respecting the principle of the independence of the judiciary.
Afternoon sessions included 3 separate panel discussions covering "The road to Tallinn", "e-CODEX Projects" and "e-CODEX & Academia". eu-LISA's Guido Brockmann took part in the first of the three that discussed the journey that transformed e-CODEX from a project into a working solution and the 'gold standard' for digital communication in the e-Justice domain.
eu-LISA would like to acknowledge the continuous engagement of all parties involved both in the past management and the handover operations and would like to express its sincere gratitude for the outstanding work and the remarkable collaborative efforts.
Background:
Considered the flagship project of EU e-Justice, e-CODEX – which stands for e-Justice Communication via Online Data Exchange – is a decentralised IT system that provides an interoperable solution for cross-border exchange of judiciary data, thus allowing all Member States to communicate with each other using their existing national systems.
e-CODEX allows its users - competent judicial authorities, legal practitioners - to electronically send and receive case-related data, whether texts, audio or video recordings, in a swift and secure manner.
