Overview on Pilot

WHAT IS SMART BORDERS?

Smart Borders is the European Commission initiative to manage EU external borders in a more efficient and modern way by using new and innovative technologies.

The European Commission aims at implementing a more modern, more efficient and more secure border management. It should improve the management of the external borders of the Schengen Member States, facilitate border crossings for pre-vetted third country national (TCN) frequent travelers, provide information on over-stayers and fight against irregular immigration. This proposal leads the way towards a next generation of border checks, relying on new, much more effective technologies which will bring the following benefits:

  • Speed up border crossing.

  • Enhance travellers' experience on the border.

  • Remove manual passport stamping.

  • Providing Border Guards with more time to focus in passengers rights/duties.

  • Provide information on over-stayers.

  • Fight against irregular immigration.

WHAT IS SMART BORDERS PILOT?

The Smart Borders Pilot is a testing phase which aims to test certain new technologies on the border to support the decision making process in the future.

The Pilot has been entrusted to the EU Agency for the Operational Management of large-scale IT Systems in the area of Freedom, Security and Justice (eu-LISA), in close collaboration with the Member States and other European stakeholders. The testing will be carried out between March and September 2015.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

Volunteering non-EU, non-Schengen nationals are welcome to participate in this exercise, which will help the European Union to verify the feasibility of different options and how these could impact the currently existing border check process, from a technical, organisational and financial point of view.
